Ableton is better in my opinion (better than Reason 4 anyway). Reason 4's sequencer is nowhere near as good and you can DJ with Ableton as well if you wish. Ableton can also handle audio without having to load it into a sampler.
I like Reasons instruments though so i sometimes use it as a rewired plugin to Logic.

Bit of an odd question this, its like asking which is better between a hummer and a Lamborghini.
I could tell you a Lamborghini, but you'd feel pretty stupid turning up to war in it.
They are very different beasts with different plus points and minus points, in a nutshell:
Reason
-Closed programme, you can only use instruments/effects included. Its very stable and super-cpu friendly.
Ableton
Hybrid performance/sequencer software, allows you to record audio in and load up VST effects and instruments from other companies. Has a session view for getting grooves together.
Which is better depends very much on you, I'd suggest you read a lot and look into it and think about what you need. Personally I use ableton, and I think long-term its a better choice to start with. That said, if you became a master of reason and then moved to ableton you could rewire it in and make a very powerful combo with a lot of the plus points from both.

Zac, Welcome,
I would try trial/demo versions of both first, see what one you like, which one do you feel more comfortable with, everyones different, its all about what's best for you, and what will give you the opportunity to get your ideas out the easiest.
Both are fantastic programs. In my opinion i would go for Ableton, but who am i to listen to! Get playing!

its a hard thing to say what programs are better than others, after all its down to the person thats using them that counts..it depends what sort of thing you want to do..if your into djing then ableton would suit you better.. the sequencers also alot better than reasons..i prefer ableton myself because it so user friendly.. but reason is a good program aswell if you no what you want out of it..they are only tools at the end of the day..

You've asked a tough question that is very personalized, but I can give you my personal opinion.
I used Reason4 at first and was very happy with the instruments, layout of the s/w, ability to rewire tracks visually, and simplicity of the program. My friends were using Ableton and I swore that I was always going to use Reason as my core. Then I ran into the limits of Reason - you can't record audio (v4), input VSTs, and you are limited to the instruments within the program. So I started using Ableton Live7.
Ableton has a much better audio engine. It just sounds cleaner when comparing them both. That being said, I would re-route Reason to Ableton and take advantage of both. Then I found VSTs and the addition thereof to Ableton is limitless. In spite of Reason's inherent simplicity, I found that Ableton is equally well layed out and just as intuitive to use only with much more complexity - it is a much more versatile program. All that being said, there are just some intruments in Reason that I simply love, so I will continue to use Reason, but now I use it as a seperate instrument where Ableton is my DAW that controls all my h/w and s/w.
Hope that helps.
Good luck!
