Here's a link to a project I've been working on, for everyone running Live for performances. It basically allows you to sample any audio, cut if up, resequence it, and then mod the playback of the sequence-all on the fly. Full text and videos on http://mattnasty.com. Also there is a simple project of it and midirack. The idea is so you don't have to plan a Live set. That's not my style. Requires Liveslice DEMO(or full version) and Launchpad with 8.1.3. Enjoy! Oh and video 2 might have a recognizable choon:)

There are plenty of softwares that could be used for this purpose, but Ableton does rank high among them and has many followers. Every software has some extended features but you should check for them that would prove to be the best option to you based on your requirements. Many of these softwares would be hard to work on but would be quite easy if you get used to it and have the right configuration to work on, Ableton is just one of them.

the only thing i've seen that can sample and resequence on the fly via user interface requires max and a monome. something can always be sampled and reordered without a user programmed sequence.
